Battleship Rock

(This is a continuation of the Jemez Mountains posting, May 24, 2013)

Battleship Rock is actually on the way back to Albuquerque.  The Jemez River flows along one side of the outcropping.  It is probably 5 – 6 miles further downstream from our hike earlier in the day.

The area here is very close in with forest running right down to the river’s edge.  The valley is steep and many boulders are lying in and next to the river.  Fly fishing is challenging with everything waiting to grab your line as you cast in this close area.  The river goes back and forth between small falls and pools.  The gradient of the river is somewhat steeper than upstream and gives me many opportunities to experiment with long exposure images of the small waterfalls.

On this Saturday a lot of people are visiting.  Battleship Rock is one of those famous places in the Jemez Mountains people stop to see, have lunch, fish, hike and just enjoy getting away.  We saw quite a number of families picnicking and fishing with their kids.

Byron only had marginally better luck here; a couple trout took a look at the flies but were not interested.

That’s okay, we’ll be back!

Thanks for stopping by
Mark
