Late September – Kayaking, Pennybacker bridge area and Bull Creek

We are heading into greater Austin for today’s adventure.  Approaching and actual driving through a small part of Austin means sitting on the I-35 parking lot along with other temporary two and three lane parking lots.  This activity reminds us of some of the details we lived through in our past, working life.

Eleven of us are up for today’s paddle.  This part of the Colorado River is better known as Lake Austin.  It looks like a river to us but we take everyone’s word on this being a lake.

Kayak meeting
We paddle up a small cove downstream from our put-in point.  The far side of the cove is the Austin Country Club.  Passing the country club we enter multiple covered docks each spot filled with large boats, not yachts in my estimation but something you will cruise in with in style.  Opposite the docks are condos of the probable owners.

Returning to Lake Austin we paddle beside two holes of the country club.  At the end of the country club we come upon extravagant houses lining the lake.  We look at each other in amazement at the line of homes one more opulent than the previous.  Turning into the next cove we notice less extravagant homes, still way above our income level.

Crossing Lake Austin we enter Bull Creek.  A tree covered canyon wall climbs in front of us.  Homes on top of the canyon walls need long stairways to access the creek.

Bull Creek
Bull Creek is littered with pine needles, trigs and branches from a recent wind and rainstorm.  We paddle upstream to the County Line restaurant.  The aromas of smoked meats waft across the creek.  As tempting as this is we keep paddling knowing we will be dining at Ski Shores Café after we have put up our kayaks.

Returning to our landing point we see a group of adults conducting baptisms in Lake Austin

Our dining stop, Ski Shores Café is right on the shore of Lake Austin; burgers, tacos, wings and other bar type food.  Very tasty.

Thank you for stopping by,

Mark
