Eastern Sierra Workshop part 8

Between returning from Lundy Canyon and going to Bodie, CA we stopped for lunch.  We stood in line at Mono Cone a small drive up which makes burgers of many different types, and ice cream cones.  The food was good but you have to plan when you go because this day in mid October was their last for the season.

Bodie State Historic Park is the original 1860’s – 1880’s mining town of Bodie.  In the early 1900’s the gold boom had run its course and Bodie soon became a ‘ghost town’.

There are in the neighborhood of 100 buildings still standing along with one of the original gold mills.  Most of the way to the park is paved except for the last three miles which we easily navigated in a passenger car.  You can find more information at http://www.bodie.com/

Those people had a hard life.  Looking closely at the buildings I saw how they used everything to make the buildings, waterproof, wind proof, and whatever other proof they needed.  I recognized tops of old barrels with screw on tops used to block holes on the outside of several buildings.

There were parts of different machines laying all over the place.  I was amazed at how different eras came together with one of the vehicles; metal springs, solid rubber tires and wooden spokes making up the wheels.

Thank you for stopping by,
Mark
